Gisteren kwam ik na een heel steile afdaling aan in Pont-a-Mousson langs de Moezel. Dat betekent ook dat de dag begin met een steile klim.
Ik heb op mijn tocht door de omstandigheden (veelal de afstand) ook al wat “hoogtepunten” links moeten laten liggen. Dat was vooral het geval voor enkele belangrijke Amerikaanse monumenten/begraafplaatsen. In Montfaucon mistte ik de grootste Amerikaanse begraafplaats in Europa, het monument in Montsec zag ik enkel van heel ver en hier St.Mihiel American Cemetery lag jammer genoeg te ver uit mijn route.
De Amerikanen hebben vooral in deze regio een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan het beëindigen van WOI. Aanvankelijk deed president Woodrow Wilson er alles aan om zijn land neutraal te houden.
Amerika trad pas binnen in de oorlog vanaf 3 april 1917 nadat duidelijk was geworden dat Duitsland tot een onbeperkte duikbootoorlog zou overgaan. De Amerikanen hadden op dat moment een leger van niks, amper 200.000 man, geen moderne wapens en niet behoorlijk opgeleid. Daardoor duurde het tot april 18 voor de Amerikaanse troepen massaal in Europa begonnen te arriveren onder leiding van de koppige opperbevelhebber Pershing. Ze brachten moed, enthousiasme, vechtlust, optimisme en zelfvertrouwen mee. Allemaal zaken die hier in het begin van de oorlog ook aanwezig waren maar ondertussen helemaal verdwenen zowel bij de geallieerden als bij de Duitsers. En ook niet onbelangrijk, ze waren met veel.
Hoewel generaal Pershing eerst dezelfde fouten maakte als de andere generaals gaf het inzetten van zijn troepen de doorslag tot het beëindigen van WOI. Er sneuvelden in totaal 56.000 Amerikanen, vooral in de laatste twee maanden van de oorlog.
Bornes de Front of bornes Vauthier (naar de beeldhouwer die deze werkjes maakte). Het was ooit de bedoeling langs de volledige frontlijn te plaatsen. Slechts 120 van deze paaltjes werden tussen 1921 en 1927 geplaatst langs de frontlijn van 1918 toen de oorlog afgelopen was. In feite is het ook een soort westernfront way. Er schieten er nog 97 over. Ze staan zowel in België als Frankrijk.
Ik verlaat Pont-a-mousson met een meer dan stevige klim, zo ben ik direct wakker.
Wat me opvalt, ik ben soms kilometers alleen, ik kom niemand tegen ! Vrankrik is toch immens zulle !
Boven in Mousson dit gedenkteken, ter nagedachtenis van generaal Edmund. W.Searby en de manschappen van de Patton-brigade gesneuveld in september 1944 bij de bevrijding van Mousson. Patton trouwens, diende hier in de streek en raakte er gewond in WOI.

Misschien begint het voor jullie vervelend te worden maar voor mij zeker nog niet, de vergezichten en bossen blijven prachtig !
Intussen in Aalbeke, het thuisfront, klaar voor vertrek.
Zegt er hier iemand : “Ik sta te popelen van ongeduld om de moppen te aanhoren . Tot straks Jannicq 😍”
Port sur Seille, zoals meer dan 95 procent van de dorpen waar ik passeer, de kerk, la mairie( het gemeentehuis) , het herdenkingsmonument voor de plaatselijke gesneuvelden, maar een cafee of een winkeltje is nog moeilijker te vinden dan een puist op het gat van miss Belgie.
En we zijn weer vertrokken, aangenaam weer !

Herdenkingsmonument voor de burgerslachtoffers van WOI in Nomény.
In Nomeny lieten onze germaanse vrienden zicht helemaal aan het begin van de oorlog van hun allerslechtste kant zien. De duitse zenuwen stonden strak gespannen, en ze waren als de dood voor de zogenaamde ‘franc-tireurs’ (een franc-tireur, of vrijschutter is een persoon die aanvallend vijandelijk leger nadeel probeert te berokkenen zonder dat hij een militair is).
De troepen hadden soms maar een klein excuus nodig om vergeldingsmaatregelen te treffen. In Nomeny werden op 19 augustus 1914 70 vrouwen kinderen en oude vandagen geëxecuteerd. Het dorp werd eveneens volledig plat gebrand. Deze vergeldingsmaatregelen zijn te vergelijken met wat er gebeurde in Leuven op 29 augustus 1914 en in Roeselare (schuwe maandag) op 19 oktober 1914 waarbij 161 mensen terecht gesteld werden (zoek dit maar eens op …). Deze barbaarse daden zorgden voor ongekende steun in de geallieerde landen en leidde tot heel hoge aantal recruten.

Als we hier bij ons op de monumenten de namen van de burgerslachtoffers zien is het ook dikwijls het gevolg van vergeldingsmaatregelen. Jammer dat Patton Hitler niet is tegen gekomen in WO 1 misschien was de geschiedenis dan anders gelopen. Groetjes aan Trui. Ik bekijk nog iets over je grootouders in 14/18 en laat het je dan weten.
